Drizella was Cinderella's bossy older stepsister. She was quite selfish, spoiled and greedy like her mother Lady Tremaine. Drizella's main interest was getting a man with lots of money to marry her so she could be a socialite like her mother so, she followed her mother's advice in order to impress her mother and not to fail her mother. Between her and her sister Anastasia, Drizella was often considered the more ugly one of the two stepsisters for she had not mended her ways like her younger sister Anastasia which resulted in Drizella never finding a man to fall in love with her. In addition, Drizella's treatment towards Anastasia and Cinderella was very cruel for she was very bossy and gave verbal abuse like her mother. However, after Cinderella's marriage to Prince Thomas and even Anastasia to the town baker, which left Drizella home with her socialite mother, she began to grow slightly bitter toward the world and jealous of her sister and stepsister finding someone to love, because she assumed it was due to their looks. She became quite superficial, until she was granted beauty by Rumpelstiltskin, when she realized beauty wasn't everything in life. And when the Evil Queen banished her to live alone in a dank hovel in the Enchanted Forest with no reflective surfaces to admire her own beauty, she began to understand riches weren't everything either, and loneliness was a horrible companion.

The poverty and solitude she had been subjected to would've humbled a better person, but Drizella was never quite that person. It turned her bitter and angry. After striking a second deal with Rumpelstiltskin, she may have been allowed freedom to come and go as she pleased instead of bound to the hovel the Evil Queen places her in, but it didn't change how she felt toward the Evil Queen; her energies focused on attaining revenge on the Evil Queen. The freedom, though, did seem to give her a new sense of self, bringing back that haughty bitch quality to her personality.

Drizella's beginnings start with her mother, Lady Tremaine, who had come from poor beginnings, having been born the youngest child of a miller. When her older sister Cora managed to marry Prince Henry, son of King Xavier and fifth in line to the throne, Cora was able to help arrange a respectable marriage for her little sister (Lady Tremaine) to Lord Tremaine. In their earlier years, while their father was still alive, Drizella and her younger sister Anastasia would often enjoy going to see their slightly older cousin Regina who was wonderful fun and would go horseback riding with them.

As they got older, after their father died and their mother remarried to a Baron, the Tremaine sisters saw less of their cousin, having moved to another kingdom entirely. Their mother, due mostly likely to her harsher upbringing and desire to scale the social ladder, was probably a horrible influence for her daughters. She groomed them to be social climbers like herself, to value money and social standing above anything else. When their stepfather died a sudden death, their mother's true colors were free to be released. She took control of her second husband's estate and money and the Tremaine sisters' stepsister Ella was basically treated like a scullery maid rather than a sister. Both Drizella and Anastasia teased and taunted Ella frequently, probably Drizella more so. She only ever wanted to make her mother proud and treating Ella like the dirt under their shoes seemed to do the trick. Because she was usually covered with cinders from the fireplace, they dubbed their stepsister as Cinderella. Drizella and Anastasia would grow up quite spoiled and almost cruel toward Cinderella.

A few years later, they attended the wedding of their cousin Regina to King Leopold and are happy for Regina becoming Queen. Eventually, more years passed; King Leopold died, Regina's stepdaughter Snow White has gone missing and Regina has taken over her kingdom. At the same time, Drizella and Anastasia have been attending balls to meet potential husbands.

Eventually, there is a ball for Prince Thomas to choose a bride amongst all the eligible ladies in the kingdom. Drizella and Anastasia attend, and when Cinderella appeared, ready to attend with them, had her dress torn to bits by Drizella and Anastasia in their jealously and cruelty. However, much to Drizella's displeasure, she was passed over by Prince Thomas and several other possible suitors. Cinderella won Prince Thomas' heart and even Anastasia found love shortly after with the town baker during the wedding preparations for Cinderella and her prince. This left Drizella alone at home with her socialite mother who she never seemed to be able to fully please. She knew she wasn't gorgeous; her hair was limp, her face often had pimples, her eyebrows bushy and untamed. What made her ugly was mostly her personality.

Drizella assumed the others found love because they were beautiful; too clouded by her superficiality to see otherwise. She wished to be a great beauty, admired by many, for all her life. It was then that Rumpelstiltskin appeared and offered her such a wish, but at a price, because "all magic comes with a price." Not caring one iota what the price was, the superficial "ugly" sister Drizella was transformed from her plain Jane appearance into that of a graceful, gorgeous woman. Her dark, limp locks were soft and bounced, her skin was smooth and unblemished, her green eyes sparkled, her lips seemed more plump.

"Ahh, lovely. No longer the ugly duckling now, are we?"

- Rumpelstiltskin to Drizella

In almost no time at all, the Evil Queen was informed by her mirror that not only was Snow White the fairest of them all, but now also Drizella. With her hands full, dealing with Snow White and trying to attain the Dark Curse, she simply had Drizella banished to live out her days in a dark and dank hovel in the Enchanted Forest, alone, with no one to see or admire her beauty, and with no reflective surfaces so she could admire herself either; with no one to love.

It was a couple of months, living like that, growing depressed and lonely, which turned her bitter and angry, instead of humbling her as it would to a better person. She would not forget or forgive the Evil Queen for placing her in her current conditions. If anything, though she wouldn't admit it, it was the loneliness that perturbed her the most. She called upon Rumpelstiltskin again, informing him that since she was forced to live alone with no reflective surface to admire herself, nor anyone else around to admire her beauty, that her contract was void with him. He conjured the contract, and read it over, grimacing where it did state in the contract that her wish was to be admired for her beauty by many until her final breath, and since she was nowhere near death, he had no choice but free her from her contract. Though, much to his surprise, she countered with a second wish or, rather, a compromise. In exchange for great power (though not as great as his), she offered Rumpelstiltskin herself to be available to him whenever he needed; for tasks, favors, jobs, someone to talk to, whatever. Maybe a little "washing each other's backs" especially where the Evil Queen was concerned. It was no secret no one liked her and Drizella commented that, "the enemy of my enemy is my friend." When she asked if that sounded like a deal, she offered him her hand, "Power for me, and you can retain me for whatever it is you feel necessary."

Rumpelstiltskin was rather intrigued by the proposition and made the deal with her. She found herself free to leave the hovel and venture out into the world. She fell in love with the power Rumpelstiltskin had given her, and took it to her dark place. She had planned on using her new powers to worm her way into life of a widowed king and then into his heart but instead remained living in her hovel till she found an estate or kingdom that suited her. Of course she came to Rumpelstiltskin when he requested her, as per their deal, and she found solace in having someone to interact with who knew her intentions; that she didn't have to pretend around when beyond her hovel or his estate, and the boundaries of their "arrangement" could be up for debate. One said example was when he went to meet with Cinderella when she was already pregnant. He requested Drizella come as well, but to hide as he met with her stepsister. If all went well during the "meeting" then he wouldn't need Drizella's help after all but if anything happened not in favor of Rumpelstiltskin, Drizella was to capture Prince Thomas as collateral. As Rumpelstiltskin predicted, Cinderella tricked when he signed their new contract, which caused his capture to happen. Cinderella had false labor pains immediately after, and Drizella took the opportunity to capture Prince Thomas when he went to a nearby well to get some water. She placed him the dungeons of Rumpelstiltskin's estate for the time being.

After the next few weeks, while the Dark Curse was nearing its arrival, Drizella snuck into the Dwarves' mines to pay a visit to Rumpelstiltskin. During one such visit she asked him for advice on claiming her own "estate". He tells her to go to his estate, find the wand he took from Cinderella's fairy godmother after he killed her and use it, since he had no use for it in his current condition. She did just that, finding the wand and using it to her advantage. With Prince Thomas in her capture, his father's kingdom was at wit's end and it was easy for her to use the wand to enchant the kingdom's soldiers to turn on the king and her stepsister, the pregnant Princess Ella, who Drizella would only ever refer to her as how she knew her: as Cinderella. One of those she didn't need to enchant to gain their assistance was Puck, a mischievous fairy and jester in the court of Oberon, the fairy king. He happened upon Drizella on her road to overtaking Prince Thomas' father's kingdom, and he (Puck) allied himself to Drizella, desiring to be her right hand man, rather than the lowly jester he was.

Her usurping was short-lived, though. As soon as she was about to claim the throne for herself, the Evil Queen's Dark Curse cloud expanded from the Enchanted Forest and engulfed Drizella's new kingdom.

In literally a blink of the eye, Drizella's life had been forgotten. She was now known as Jane Mercer, a resident of Storybrooke, Maine and a snide young woman of undetermined wealth (nowhere near as rich as Mr. Gold, but well enough off). Despite her level of financial comfort she still makes a living; she works as Mr. Gold's lawyer he has on retainer; whether or not the "retaining" is strictly professional or not is between them. More publically, she has dated, off and on, Robert Goodman, principal of Storybrooke Elementary School, who has a penchant for performing magic tricks for students in the halls.

Also, having no recollection of her previous life, she has made friends with the one person she would not have wanted to be friends with before: Mayor Regina Mills (a.k.a., The Evil Queen). Not that she would have ever admitted to it in her previous life, but Jane/Drizella and Regina/The Evil Queen have numerous similarities, and in Storybrooke, they get along quite well.
